Wyoming Governor Geringer Announces Three Winners Of The Qwest/Wyoming Community Network Awards

CHEYENNE, March 14, 2002 - Governor Jim Geringer today announced the three winners of the Qwest/Wyoming Community Network (WCN) Awards. A substantial amount of the funding for the WCN and the Community Awards was provided by the former U S WEST Foundation, which became the Qwest Foundation when the companies merged on June 30, 2000.

?We are proud of the efforts of all the partners to support development of our local communities,? said Mike Ceballos, Qwest?s vice president of policy and law for Wyoming. ?These awards are intended to help move community plans from dreams to reality.?

The three Qwest/WCN award winners are:

  • Wheatland - Platte County Community Center - $10,000
  • Douglas ? CANDO Tech Center - $10,000
  • Lovell - Lovell Youth Council - $1,000

All Wyoming communities were eligible to apply for assistance to accomplish specific aspects of a project including planning, design studies, educational projects, and technical assistance. After a thorough review of many applications, the WCN Advisory Board Community Grants Committee selected these three winners. The award winners will use the funds to assist in the community development goals.

"Through planning, communities can reach their development goals and help expand and retain existing businesses," said Geringer. "Congratulations to Platte County Community Building Committee, Converse Area New Development Organization and the Lovell Youth Council."

The WCN is designed to connect Wyoming communities with the available resources and programs that will aid their development. Qwest, the Wyoming Business Council and the University of Wyoming fund the WCN. Affiliate partners include the Wyoming Association of Municipalities, Wyoming Community Development Authority, Centers for Excellence in Rural America, and the Wyoming Rural Development Council.
