Qwest Launches Industry's First Application Service Program for Independent Software Vendors and Systems Integrators

Denver, December 3, 1999 ? Qwest Communications International Inc. (NASDAQ: QWST), the broadband Internet communications company, today announced that it is launching the industry's first Application Service Provider program, called Q.ASP, to help independent software vendors (ISVs) and systems integrators (SIs) who are initiating an ASP solution.

Recognized by analysts as an applications hosting leader, Qwest is well positioned to deliver ASP enabling services that are created for the needs of ISVs and SIs. Qwest is leveraging its secure Internet protocol network platform, strategic alliances and application hosting services to provide solutions that will enable ISVs and SIs to compete in the burgeoning ASP space.

"More and more companies are realizing the financial and technical benefits of having solutions delivered via the Web that are hosted and managed by someone other than the user," said Roger Attick, Senior Vice President, Alternate Channel Markets. "And while this growth is phenomenal, I think we'll also see an increase in demand for services within end-user companies to help them determine how to more effectively use technology to gain a competitive advantage and reduce costs. Q.ASP gives Qwest the ability to build a community of ASP contributors and customers."

Available in January 2000, the Q.ASP program will include:

  • Access to Qwest Network Service Platform - the most robust, comprehensive hosting platform in the industry. Users of these programs can provide solutions to their customers through Qwest's state-of-the-art fiber optic network offering voice, video and data capabilities, fully redundant nationwide CyberCentersÔ, certified infrastructure technicians, scalable capabilities and repeatable utilities.
  • Partner engagement programs - that will assist participants in developing lead generation and establishing fulfillment relationships with other ISVs, SIs and Qwest's key strategic partners such as Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and Cisco Systems.
  • Additional services - that include technical and business consulting, asset acquisition assistance and vendor-specific customized marketing materials.

Qwest entered the ASP market in June of 1999 when it announced a joint venture with KPMG to form the industry's largest full service ASP, Qwest Cyber.Solutions, which directly services enterprises with Internet-based end-to-end complete complex application solutions. Qwest Cyber.Solutions has combined the strength of Qwest's Internet Protocol network and CyberCenters, KPMG's expertise in integration, business advisory services and applications experience, together with key software relationships with SAP, Oracle, PeopleSoft, Siebel and other software vendors to firmly established itself as a premier ASP. Qwest Cyber.Solutions is differentiated from the new program being announced today in that Q.ASP is designed to empower ISVs and SIs to become ASPs themselves.

ISVs, SIs and other VARs interested in moving their businesses to an ASP model will join Q.ASP through the Qwest Business Partner Program (QBPP), launched in July to assist technology solution providers in evolving their business model toward the services based environment of the 21st century. Participants at all levels will take advantage of incremental revenue and communications services as well as Qwest's strategic partnerships with industry leaders to build specific engagement programs that open doors to new markets and launch new solutions.
