Denver, January 30, 2001 ? Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q), the broadband Internet communications company, today announced completion of the first phase of a vital high-speed fiber optic infrastructure project, connecting the cities of Gillette, Wright and Cody. The project, a joint effort between Qwest, the state, and other service providers dramatically expands capacity, shattering the bandwidth wall and connecting the region to the future.
"Fiber optics brings reliability, increased capacity, and expandability to meet the bandwidth needs of business, education, and healthcare as well as other emerging technologies," explained Mike Ceballos, Vice President of Qwest operations in Wyoming. "The effort is part of Qwest?s on-going commitment to upgrade Wyoming?s telecommunications infrastructure to meet the changing needs of communities and businesses."
The announcement was made Tuesday on a telephone call carried on the new fiber lines from Governor Jim Geringer in Cheyenne to Gillette Mayor Frank Latta, city officials and County Commissioners and business leaders in Gillette. In a separate call, the Governor also phoned Mayor Ken Stockwell, the Cody City Council as well as the Economic Development Council there.
Discussions about expanding the network began two years ago with Gillette, Cody and other communities throughout Wyoming. Partnerships such as the Wyoming Equality Network, the state of Wyoming, and the Department of Education have provided a basis for investments that will expand economic prospects in the state.
Fiber optics? many advantages include superior transmission quality, faster speeds, and greater capacity. Perhaps its greatest benefit is in its ability to upgrade to meet demand for services. Although a fiber cable is just 5/1000 of an inch thick, two hair-thin strands of optical fiber can transmit the equivalent of 24,000 telephone calls all at the same time.
Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) is a leader in reliable, scalable and secure broadband Internet-based data, voice and image communications for businesses and consumers. The Qwest Macro Capacity® Fiber Network, designed with the newest optical networking equipment for speed and efficiency, spans more than 104,000 miles globally.
