Tempe Union High School District announced that it has received a Qwest Foundation grant for $10,000 to provide funding for Tempe High School’s Job’s for Arizona Graduates (JAG) Program.
JAG is a school-to-career program implemented in 700 high schools, alternative schools, community colleges, and middle schools across the country and the United Kingdom. JAG's mission is to keep young people in school through graduation and provide work-based learning experiences that will lead to career advancement opportunities or to enroll in a postsecondary institution that leads to a rewarding career.
“Qwest is proud to support Tempe High School’s Jobs for Arizona Graduates (JAG) Program, a crucial service in today’s economy,” said Jim Campbell, Qwest Arizona president. “Programs like JAG are doing amazing work with high school students by creating postsecondary educational opportunities, jobs and careers right here in Arizona.”
JAG is in its third year at Tempe High School. Tanya Moulton, the program coordinator, said “the program’s primary objectives are to help students, particularly juniors and seniors, stay in school through graduation and be placed in an entry-level job leading to a career and/or pursuing a postsecondary education.” JAG targets students most at risk of dropping out helps them overcome obstacles preventing them from being successful in school by providing tutoring, test-preparation, communication and job skills.
Kate Glenn, Tempe High School Assistant Principal, said “JAG is very beneficial as a support system for many of our students. It provides a lot of guidance in helping students graduate from high school, while equipping them with the skills and confidence they need to enter the work force and/or post-secondary education options. Tanya Moulton does a fabulous job, not just helping her students dream about future possibilities, but proving to them through multiple experiences, that they can actually achieve those futures.”
The Qwest Foundation awards grants to community-based programs that generate high-impact and measurable results, focusing on pre-K through 12th grade education.
