DENVER – Oct. 13, 2009 – Qwest Communications (NYSE: Q) announced today that Sherman & Howard L.L.C. has been selected as the Qwest Law Department’s Spirit of Diversity Partner. This annual award is meant to recognize a partner law firm that best demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity within its firm and the legal community.

Qwest’s partner law firms were each asked to complete a survey that was evaluated based upon the National Association of Law Placement standards (NALP) and the firms’ diversity activities. Specific survey criteria included the overall demographic profile of the participating firms and detail about the firm’s activities to increase diversity in the profession, including having a dedicated diversity officer, a formal diversity recruiting and retention program and volunteerism in the community.
Sherman & Howard has a long-standing commitment to diversity. In 1993, the firm was a charter member of the Colorado Pledge to Diversity Legal Group and assisted with drafting that group’s Pledge document. In addition, Sherman & Howard has participated in the Group’s 1L Program since its inception in 2001. The firm has hired eight diverse first year students through the program and has invited seven of those students to return for their 2L summer and the opportunity to earn an associate position at the firm following graduation. At the high-school level, the firm has been a corporate work-study partner with Arrupe Jesuit High School since 2004 and employs four students annually through the work-study progt;

This year, the Qwest Law Department received the 2009 Employer of Choice-Western Region from the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. In 2008, the Qwest Law Department received the Outstanding Corporate Award from the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association and also received the Diversity Leadership award from the Diversity in the Legal Profession Committee of the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations.
