DENVER, May 11, 2001 ? Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q), the broadband Internet communications company, is introducing a new option for its Arizona Caller ID customers that virtually eliminates unidentified calls and gives Caller ID users even more control than they have today over incoming phone calls.
The new service, called Qwest Security Screensm, automatically intercepts all calls from blocked and unidentified numbers and requires these anonymous callers to supply their phone number or a numeric code before their call can be completed. Unidentified callers also hear a message telling them to hang up if they?re a solicitor.
Customers must have Caller ID to use Qwest Security Screen and the new service costs $2.95 a month in addition to the basic price of $5.95 per month for Caller ID. Activation is free for customers who sign up by June 30, 2001, and one month of free service is included. Qwest customers interested in ordering Qwest Security Screen can call 1-800-600-2800.
?People told us they like it because it cuts down on the number of undesirable calls and lets them know who?s calling every time,? said Randy Meissner, senior vice president of marketing for Qwest. ?And, since there?s a message asking solicitors to hang up, Qwest Security Screen is an excellent way for customers who don?t want to hear from telemarketers to get rid of those calls without even having their phone ring.?
About forty percent of Qwest customers in Arizona have Caller ID, making it the most popular calling feature offered by the company in the state.
?I haven?t talked to a telemarketer in two months and I really enjoy that,? says Qwest Security Screen customer Jenny Carlson.

About one in 10 calls received by Caller ID users currently shows up on their Caller ID units as ?Private? or ?Unknown.?
Qwest Security Screen combines and simplifies the features of two other services from Qwest: No Solicitation and Privacy Plus. No Solicitation intercepts all incoming calls and tells solicitors to hang up. Privacy Plus is similar to Qwest Security Screen but requires the customer with the service to accept or reject the call before it?s connected.
