DENVER, June 12, 2006 - Qwest Communications International, Inc. (NYSE: Q) today announced a strategic partnership with Arizona State University (ASU) to provide voice and data services for ASU's Downtown Phoenix campus. Qwest will work together with ASU to create a customized strategy to transform technology's role in higher education into a 21st century model. This model is what education officials are calling the "New American University."
Initially, Qwest will provide the downtown campus with 3,000 connections to be used for voice, video and data services. Qwest will use its OneFlexTM Managed IP Communications product, which will provide a dedicated, customized platform comprised of managed voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP), wireless LAN and data equipment. This is a unique agreement with ASU in that it will address the needs of the downtown campus by providing an end-to-end, fully bundled service, including all equipment, maintenance, monitoring and management.
Qwest will also join ASU in what's called a "Strategic Technology Alliance," which means Qwest will be a strategic ally in managing telecommunications services as well as participating in other initiatives such as cooperative research projects, sponsorship of ASU scholarly activities, joint promotional opportunities and the possible relocation of business activities to SkySong, home of ASU's Scottsdale Innovation Center.
"We were looking for a partner whose core competency was telephony and networking, and Qwest was a perfect fit," said Adrian Sannier, ASU. "Qwest worked closely with us to create a true partnership, one that was more than a vendor relationship. As a higher-education entity, our focus needs to be on students and growing our university using cost-effective solutions, and our alliance with Qwest will definitely help us to achieve our goals."
"Qwest's Spirit of Service means working with customers to provide telecommunications services that meet their needs, and we're excited to provide a customized product, service and partnership that specifically match ASU's vision," said Tom Richards, executive vice president of business markets group for Qwest. "While the convergence of voice and data has proven to be efficient and cost-effective, it's created new challenges for customers. We couldn't be more proud to provide ASU with Qwest's expertise in IP communications services."
Qwest services will be available to the College of Nursing, the College of Public Programs and the University College. The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and KAET-TV, Phoenix's PBS affiliate, will relocate to downtown in 2008, along with the opening of the School of Global Health and Medicine.
