MINNEAPOLIS, June 4, 2008 – The Qwest Foundation today announced a $5,000 donation to the American Red Cross Twin Cities Chapter. The donation will be designated to the Local Disaster Relief Fund, which helps the Twin Cities Red Cross respond to over 300 local disasters each year, including Sunday’s tornado in Hugo.
To date, the Red Cross Twin Cities has provided more than 7,000 meals and snacks to survivors and responders.
"Qwest is proud to support the important efforts of the Twin Cities Red Cross following the Hugo tornado," said Qwest President John Stanoch. "It's important for each of us to help Minnesota families get back on their feet during this time of need."
Red Cross volunteers have completed the primary Disaster Assessment following Sunday's tornado and storms that affected residents in Hugo, Blaine, Coon Rapids and Lino Lakes.
Qwest employees are also on the scene to ensure customers are staying connected.
“We arrived soon after the tornado and accessed Qwest’s facilities, extended a helping hand in any way we could -- from clearing debris to helping people get free Call Forwarding for their Qwest home phone line,” said Dennis Rice, Qwest Network Operations. ”It’s a somber place to be, but there is a positive attitude about the future.”
As of Wednesday, May 28, Red Cross damage assessment teams have found 714 homes affected by the storm.
