Phoenix, AZ - November 16, 2009: On Monday, November 16th, 2009 at 7:30 AM, Jim Campbell, Arizona State President of Qwest, will make a gift presentation of $12,500 to the students of Teleos Preparatory Academy.  Located on the campus of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church at 1401 E. Jefferson Street in Phoenix, Teleos Prep is the 6th and newest Great Hearts Academy in the Valley, and the first to cater to the underserved downtown community.

The presentation will take place during the school’s daily Family Meeting, where Jim Campbell will be joined by Great Hearts Academies CEO, Dr. Daniel Scoggin, and the Founding Headmaster of Teleos Prep, Mr. Reggie Johnson.

The gift will support the academy’s critical after school program, as well an upgrade to the Chemistry and Physics programs in the Great Hearts network.  Reggie Johnson stressed the importance of these quality programs for the students of this new school.  "For the students of this community, having a quality after-school program isn't just a nice extra, it is of vital importance to our ability to do additional one-on-one tutoring outside the normal classroom setting.  We are very grateful to the Qwest Foundation for its commitment to education and generosity in our community."

The gift is also of special meaning to Qwest’s Alliance of Black Telecommunications Professionals group, who saw the new and important work being done at Teleos Prep and decided to support it with a recommended grant.

“Qwest is proud to continue its long standing commitment to giving back to the communities in which our customers and employees work and live,” said Jim Campbell, Qwest President for Arizona.  “Teleos’ disciplined and passionate approach to education and Qwest’s desire to grow our work force from within our own State made our decision to partner with them an easy one.”

Teleos Preparatory Academy offers a public, tuition-free college prep education with open enrollment and no admissions testing.  The school opened in July of 2009 with 250 students in grades 3-8.  At full growth in the year 2013 it will serve 550 students in grades 3-12.

Great Hearts Academies is a non-profit charter school management organization dedicated to providing the families of metro Phoenix with a liberal arts preparatory education in a tuition-free and public school setting.  There are currently six Great Hearts academies across the Metropolitan Phoenix region serving 2,000 students, with a plan to open 12 schools by the year 2012 and serve over 7,000 students.
