DENVER - August 3, 1998 - Qwest today announced its participation in a consortium of communications companies that is building a submarine cable system connecting the United States to Japan. Scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2000, the 13,125-mile cable will extend from Point Arena and San Luis Obispo in Calif. to Kahe Point, Hawaii and on to Kita-Ibaraki, Shima and Maruyama in Japan. From Japan, connections can be made to other digital lightwave submarine cable systems reaching numerous points in Asia. Designed with a self-healing ring system and technologically advanced Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) technology, the four fiber pair cable will ultimately possess the capability to transmit information at the rate of 640 gigabits per second.
?Asia presents Qwest an enormous market opportunity, and we are pleased to be a part of this alliance that is building the highest capacity transpacific cable available today,? said Joseph P. Nacchio, president and CEO of Qwest. ?The joint ownership of this cable allows Qwest to extend its robust U.S. network to reach the most populous continent in the world. Once this cable is online, Qwest will have the capability to transmit data, multimedia and voice traffic from as far as Eastern Europe, across the United States, into Mexico, and on to Asia.?
