DENVER -- On schedule to provide a broadband network that can deliver a new generation of multimedia communications applications, Qwest (Nasdaq: QWST) today announced the activation of its high-speed network between Denver, Colo. and Kansas City, Mo. With the activation of the Kansas City market, Qwest now has more than 2,800 miles of its ultra high-capacity fiber network in service, extending from California to Missouri.

"Extending service availability to Kansas City attests to the fact that the construction and activation of the Qwest network is right on schedule and on budget," said Joseph P. Nacchio, president and CEO of Qwest. "We're following through on the promise of our network and lighting the way -- city by city - to bring the very latest, most affordable and innovative communications services to businesses and consumers around the globe."

The Qwest Macro CapacitySM Fiber network consists of highly reliable and secure bi-directional, line switching OC-192 SONET ring architecture. This self-healing system adds even more security and reliability to the network by allowing instantaneous rerouting in the event of a fiber cut. This architecture will virtually eliminate network downtime for Qwest Network customers.

The Qwest network is poised to deliver high-speed broadband capacity and the framework necessary to empower businesses with the next generation of multimedia communications. The Qwest network is the first network designed with enough capacity to send multimedia content - data, images and video - as seamlessly as voice.
