DENVER, May 11, 2000 -- Qwest Communications International Inc., (NYSE: Q), the broadband Internet communications company, today announced it will be the presenting sponsor of The INTERNATIONAL, one of the PGA Tour's premier golf tournaments.
The INTERNATIONAL Presented By Qwest will be held July 31-Aug. 6 at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, CO.
Qwest headlines a list of leading Internet and technology companies, including Cisco Systems, Sun Microsystems, Lucent and CIBER, a Denver based Internet solutions provider. This marks one of the first times that a PGA Tour event has been predominantly supported by leading Internet and technology companies.
In addition to its multi-year presenting sponsorship, Qwest has initiated a pilot program with The INTERNATIONAL's lead charity, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver Inc. Qwest will provide approximately $75,000 in services and equipment to support high-speed Internet connectivity to the organization's eight locations in Denver.
"This new strategic relationship between Qwest and The INTERNATIONAL demonstrates our leadership role in supporting one of Colorado's top events and charities, in one of the country’s hottest Internet markets," said Joseph P. Nacchio, Chairman and CEO of Qwest.
PGA Tour officials, INTERNATIONAL and Qwest executives hailed the new partnership as an opportunity to strengthen their presence in Colorado and the Denver metro area.
"This is a wonderful day for The INTERNATIONAL," said Castle Pines Golf Club Founder and President Jack Vickers. "Here on our 15th anniversary, to be announcing this partnership with such a visionary company as Qwest is a significant milestone. The fact that they are based right here in Colorado makes it a perfect fit."
The tournament features many of the world's best players and has produced an impressive array of champions. "One of the most appealing aspects of this sponsorship," said Nacchio, "is the desire of Jack Vickers and his team to grow their outreach programs in the community, state and region. We plan to enhance those efforts and we can only dream about the possibilities of how we can help others through this partnership."
INTERNATIONAL Executive Director Larry Thiel sees an opportunity to expand the tournament's current outreach programs and join Qwest in establishing even more far-reaching ones.
"We want to encourage a broad section of individuals and groups to take part in the great game of golf, whether they play it or watch it" said Thiel. "We realize the playing field needs to be level for everyone and it is our earnest desire to make that happen."
The primary charity of The INTERNATIONAL since its inception has been the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, Inc.
Qwest will also be the presenting sponsor of Youth Day at The INTERNATIONAL, a special free clinic for youngsters, and the Youth Golf Series, a summer-long program for kids held in conjunction with the PGA Section of Colorado, Gold Crown Foundation and Rocky Mountain Junior Golf. It climaxes with the Pro-Junior Challenge in which finalists play a round with PGA Tour professionals. On Monday, July 31, more than 30 youngsters will participate with PGA Tour pros.
In addition, The INTERNATIONAL also joins Golf-4-Fun in presenting a clinic for the physically challenged every Tuesday of tournament week.
Colorado's only PGA Tour event has consistently scored excellent TV ratings in the U.S. and around the world, thanks in part to its unusual scoring format: The Modified Stableford. Instead of keeping score against par, the players win points by making double eagles (8), eagles (5) or birdies (2). They also lose points for anything worse than par. Since the tournament started in 1986, some of the game's elite have taken home the trophy: Greg Norman, Davis Love, Jose Maria Olazabal, Phil Mickelson (twice), Lee Janzen and Vijay Singh.
The defending champion is David Toms, who last year scored 47 points for a narrow victory over David Duval, who posted 44.
