Qwest Communications Gives Consumers Control Of Incoming Calls With New Wireline Feature, "Talking" Call Waiting

Denver, November 2, 2000 — Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q), the broadband Internet communications company, today announced that its newest wireline feature, Talking Call Waiting, is now available to more than 65 percent of residential and small business customers in the 14 states where Qwest provides local service. Talking Call Waiting enhances traditional Call Waiting by announcing the name of the second caller immediately after the Call Waiting beep. Qwest is the first company in the nation to deploy this feature to the majority of its consumer base at one time.

"Talking Call Waiting lets people communicate on their own terms," said Randy Meissner, senior vice president of marketing for Qwest national mass markets. "We’ve all had the experience of taking a call that wasn't important, or missing a call we wished we'd taken. Now, when you're on the phone and another call comes in, you don't have to put the first caller on hold to find out who's calling. You decide which calls to take and which to let go to Voice Messaging.

"Small businesses owners can use Talking Call Waiting to close sales or manage their companies more efficiently. Now, when second calls come in, they'll know immediately if the call is from an important customer or vendor, or if it can wait."

Talking Call Waiting uses a synthesized voice to announce the primary name of the home or business from which an incoming call is made. Only the person receiving the call hears the announcement.

In market tests, 80 percent of participants said Qwest Talking Call Waiting provided a sense of added security and control by ensuring that important calls would not be missed and reducing the number of times ongoing conversations were interrupted.

Talking Call Waiting is included in Qwest's CustomChoice package, which combines the telephone line with up to 20 optional features for one low price. CustomChoice with Talking Call Waiting is available in AZ, CO, IA, ID, MT, MN, NE, ND, OR, SD, UT, WA and WY for $32.95. The service may also be ordered separately for $2.95 per month (residential) and $3.95 per month (business).
