Denver, August 28, 2000 — Qwest Communications International Inc., the broadband Internet communications company, today announced that it will accelerate its New Mexico rollout of Qwest DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) – a service that provides customers with “always on” data connections and high-speed Internet access.
Qwest Chairman and CEO Joseph P. Nacchio made the announcement during a visit to New Mexico where he met with Governor Gary Johnson, Attorney General Patricia Madrid, local business leaders, other government officials and media. By October, Qwest plans to expand its DSL service to a majority of the Albuquerque and Las Cruces areas and will introduce DSL in Los Alamos and Santa Fe. DSL service is scheduled to be deployed to about 40 percent of the telephone lines in these areas.
"Accelerating our deployment of DSL by the end of the year is an example of how Qwest is delivering on its commitment to significantly increase its investment in New Mexico," said Nacchio. "We intend to promptly deliver to New Mexico's businesses and consumers the best in broadband Internet communications services."
"DSL availability on a wider scale means more Albuquerque businesses will be able to compete globally," said Terri Cole, president and CEO of the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. "Qwest's aggressive deployment of broadband access is a welcome and much needed change in our telecommunications landscape."
Qwest was the first company to broadly deploy DSL technology that keeps consumers and businesses continuously connected. Qwest DSL is currently offered in more than 40 cities within the 14-state region where Qwest provides local phone service.
Qwest DSL technology provides customers:
- The ability to use the DSL line for a fax machine, or even voice phone calls in some applications, while simultaneously surfing the Internet.
- Speeds from 256 Kilobytes per second (Kbps) to 7 Megabytes per second (Mbps) – up to 250 times faster than traditional modems.
- A continuous "always-on" digital connection, letting customers simply open their Internet browser software to get access. The company also offers an "on-demand" service for customers who don't require the "always-on" feature.
- Their own private link to the Internet – over their existing phone line, increasing security and reliability and eliminating traffic jams from sharing a line with other users, as is the case with cable modems.
- A choice of numerous Internet service providers, including U S WEST.net.
