Denver, September, 15, 2000 — Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q), the broadband Internet communications company, today announced it is ramping up the downstream speed of its Qwest DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) high-speed Internet access services from 256Kbps (Kilobytes per second) to 640Kbps, without an increase in price. Residential and business customers can now use the faster speeds to take better advantage of advanced broadband Internet applications such as streaming music and video, and for quicker downloads of complex Web pages and large files. By more than doubling the downstream speed, for example, Qwest DSL's entry-level service now enables customers to receive near full-motion video rates.

"The faster downstream speeds for Qwest DSL give customers a richer and more productive online experience, whether they’re using the high-speed access to view video clips of breaking news, play interactive games, or connect to their company’s network," said Shaun Gilmore, Qwest's executive vice president of communications services. "As our customers' bandwidth needs continue to evolve, we will enhance our services to meet those needs, such as today's delivery of faster speeds at industry-best pricing."

Qwest was the first company to broadly deploy DSL technology that keeps consumers and businesses continuously connected. By the end of this year, Qwest DSL will be offered to customers in 72 markets within the 14-state region where Qwest provides local phone service.

Qwest DSL technology provides customers:

  • A continuous "always-on" digital connection, priced at $29.95. The company also offers an "on-demand" service for customers who don't require the "always-on" feature, available at an industry-leading price of $19.95.
  • The ability to use the DSL line to talk on the phone or use a fax machine while simultaneously surfing the Internet.
  • Downstream speeds from 640Kbps to 7Mbps (Megabytes per second) – or 250 times faster than traditional modems.
  • Their own private link to the Internet – over their existing phone line, increasing security and reliability and eliminating traffic jams from sharing the access network with other users, as is the case with cable modems.
  • A choice of numerous Internet service providers, including Qwest.
