DENVER, July 11, 2000 — Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q), the broadband Internet communications company, today announced AppXchange, the industry's first comprehensive Application Infrastructure Platform that takes advantage of Microsoft Windows DNA and the Microsoft .NET Platform. By leveraging Qwest's infrastructure and services, independent software vendors (ISVs) and application service providers (ASPs) who participate in the Qwest Business Partner Program can easily distribute and share applications in a hosted environment.
AppXchange will create a standardized environment that fully supports applications from any ISV or ASP on the Microsoft platform. Qwest will provide sophisticated billing and provisioning systems as well as development architectures and application management tool sets. The applications will be hosted and managed in Qwest's world-class CyberCentersSM.
"We've taken the complexity out of application hosting by letting ISVs and ASPs take advantage of the distribution model without having to invest in the infrastructure and maintenance," said Lew Wilks, president of Internet and multimedia markets for Qwest Communications. "As one of the leading providers of ASP services, we continue to look for ways to help companies broaden the distribution of their software solutions."
Benefits of AppXchange to ISVs and ASPs
- Facilitate rapid application deployment
- Dramatically reduce capital investment and operational cost for ASP services
- Significantly shorten time to market for new applications
- Generate incremental recurring revenue
- Leverage Qwest’s fully managed billing and operational support systems
- Extend market reach and distribution through Qwest Business Partner Program
To support ISVs and ASPs interested in starting to plan for the AppXchange Platform, Qwest has created an application developer program called DevXchangeTM. DevXchange provides developers with software development kits, sample code, training and an Application Readiness Program to help them get up and running quickly in the AppXchange environment.
Available now, the Application Readiness Program gives developers a phased approach to realize the enhanced distribution and services provided by AppXchange which will be commercially available in early 2001. Significant components of the Application Readiness Program are the hardware, application and operating system configuration management services. These services provide developers with a standardized computing and operating platform environment optimized for hosting, the first step to becoming part of AppXchange.
"Qwest has proven industry leadership in using Microsoft Windows DNA to revolutionize the way developers create and distribute their applications," said Chris Atkinson, vice president of the Microsoft .NET Developer Solutions Group at Microsoft Corp. "AppXchange leverages that expertise as Microsoft moves to the .NET platform, and represents a paradigm shift in the industry that fundamentally changes the way customers can access, deploy and utilize applications."
