Seattle, February 9, 2007 - An agreement announced today by Wasatch Development Associates, a Salt Lake City-based developer, and Qwest Communications International Inc., will make Washington Square the first Bellevue development to be connected via fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technology. Wasatch Development Associates is the developer of Washington Square, the master-planned residential and retail development currently under construction in the heart of downtown Bellevue.
"We are thrilled to offer Washington Square residents the latest broadband technology by bringing the first deployment to Bellevue," said Dell Loy Hansen, principal of Wasatch. "Washington Square will now have access to one of the most advanced broadband technologies available in the industry. Offering fiber-to-the-home puts Washington Square at the forefront of the development community by offering this highly sought-after service."
Washington Square residents will have Qwest High-Speed Internet speeds up to 10 megabits per second (Mbps). With speeds like this, residents have the flexibility to easily manage complex home-office networking needs. The applications for residents at Washington Square are endless and include distance learning, video conferencing and telecommuting. FTTH technology is scalable to deliver downloads speeds of up to 100Mbps.
"Washington Square is another example of Qwest's strategy to deploy fiber technology in new - or "greenfield" - areas where there is a strong demand for advanced communications services," said Kirk Nelson, Qwest president for Washington. "Bellevue residents are discerning customers who expect the best there is and that includes fast, dedicated access to the latest technology."
Washington Square is a 10.5-acre community development anchoring the new pedestrian-friendly urban center in downtown Bellevue. It has the first two condominium towers already under construction with over seventy percent sold-out, a luxury hotel, restaurants, upscale shopping and a destination spa. The first residents will take occupancy in September, 2007.
Bellevue has one of the highest high-speed Internet adoption rates in the state; and with a highly educated population the need for new technologies that facilitate an easy work-from-home environment are in demand.
Qwest FTTH connections in Washington Square will allow residents to simultaneously run today's most bandwidth-intensive applications - such as, high-speed access to music and video downloading, online gaming, and streaming video- and assures customers their broadband connection will support tomorrow's applications with ease.
Through Qwest FTTH service, all Washington Square residents will have Qwest High-Speed Internet service - up to 10 megabits per second. Homeowners will also have the option to choose a Qwest service bundle, including digital voice; DIRECTV service with access to more than 250 television channels in 100 percent digital-quality picture and sound, HDTV programming and digital video recorders; and Qwest wireless service all conveniently integrated on one bill.
