DENVER, Oct 3., 2003 - The Qwest Foundation, Qwest Communication's giving program, has donated $55,000 to the Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC). The donation is part of Qwest's ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of the communities it serves.

PEBC is a partnership of education, business and community leaders that is dedicated to improving public education in Colorado. PEBC focuses on low-performing K-12 schools and classrooms by working with educators to improve teaching skills and techniques, process and by increasing the involvement of business in education.

"The PEBC was founded by business leaders who believed that the private sector had an important role to play in supporting and improving our public schools," said Barbara Volpe, PEBC president. "One of the operating premises of the organization is that improving public education is the best long-term workforce development strategy. Qwest demonstrates that commitment to making our schools world-class institutions by investing in the quality of its teachers. For this, and for all Qwest's support of education in the community, the PEBC is most grateful."

Carey Macdonald, Qwest Foundation senior director, presented the check at a ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Polton Elementary in Denver. The grant will fund PEBC's Literacy Labs - to be renamed Qwest Literacy Labs - which are part of an ongoing program that helps Colorado educators teach literacy skills to Colorado students.

The grant will also fund 14 scholarships - one from each of Qwest's 14 states - that will allow selected teachers and principals to attend PEBC's national training. Four teachers will be attending the training this November.

"We realize that public education is the backbone of our community, and we are thrilled to be a part of an organization that directly improves the quality of our Colorado public schools," said Macdonald. "We look forward to working with the PEBC and following the progress of these programs."

The Qwest Foundation is dedicated to enriching the communities the company serves. The Foundation's core principle is that investing in people and communities provides lasting value for the future. The Qwest Foundation awards grants that generate high impact and measurable results through community-based programs, focusing on K-12 education and economic development.
