DENVER – In partnership with the Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC), CenturyLink is connecting teachers with technology for the classroom. The CenturyLink Teachers and Technology Colorado Grant Program is accepting applications from teachers who want to innovatively implement technology in their classroom to increase student achievement. Deadline for applications is March 23, 2012.
In its sixth year funded by the Qwest Foundation, CenturyLink Teachers and Technology seeks to identify, highlight and recognize Colorado Pre-K-12 teachers who are using technology to help their students learn and achieve. The program has given away more than $700,000 in Colorado over the past five years, benefiting more than 27,000 students.
Teri Romsheck, a teacher at Skyview Elementary School in Windsor, applied for a grant last year for technology that empowers students to be interested participants in their own learning. This grant allowed fifth grade students at Skyview Elementary to connect with local military veterans in a unique way. Students in the “Tech-Know Squad” created iPad videos with the veterans. The students learned about these veterans’ experiences and the parts of the world where they served, as well the different branches of the military.
In addition to the veterans project, the “Tech-Know Squad” interviewed teachers to create short lessons for the first through third grades, utilizing the technology to engage the younger students.
“This grant has allowed my students to participate in their learning in a hands-on manner, using creativity and technology to interact with their education and each other,” said Romsheck. “The veterans’ project was particularly special, as our students got to meet and learn from members of our community who have given so much to our country.”
“With the budget constraints our schools are dealing with, this program has proven over the years to be beneficial for teachers and students,” said Scott Russell, vice president and general manager for CenturyLink in Denver and Northern Colorado. “Working with the PEBC, the goal of the CenturyLink Teachers and Technology program has been to increase the success of students by using technology to engage them in learning. Skyview Elementary and 30 other schools around Colorado are utilizing grants this school year to do just that, and we couldn’t be more proud of them.”
