CALDWELL, ID, June 4, 2001 ? Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE:Q), the broadband Internet communications company, announced today that it has installed and activated a new, high-speed digital switch in Caldwell. The new switch gives Qwest additional capacity to accommodate future growth and provides new digital products and services ? the first of which is Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).
The new $3.9 million digital switch is significantly faster and more efficient than the analog switch it replaces and is part of Qwest?s ongoing effort to expand and upgrade Idaho?s voice and data communications network.
?This is just one more example of Qwest?s commitment to invest in Idaho and provide our customers with high quality, reliable service,? said Barbara Wilson, Idaho and regional vice president for Qwest.
The digital switch ? essentially an advanced computer that processes local and long-distance calls and provides additional services like ISDN ? was activated over the weekend and will benefit more than 21,800 customers in Caldwell and the surrounding area. Qwest technicians completed the conversion during low-volume calling periods to minimize potential disruptions to service or 911 calls.
ISDN service lets customers connect to the Internet and send data over a single phone line at speeds up to 128 Kbps - about five times faster than the typical computer modem. The service is also versatile, allowing customers to talk on the phone and send data or graphics at the same time.
Qwest is offering ISDN service for $73 a month, ideal for customers who need around-the-clock high-speed data communications capability. Standard charges apply for any long-distance calls. Businesses or residential consumers in Caldwell wanting more information on ISDN and its applications are encouraged to contact a Qwest representative at 1-800-603-6000 (Business) or 1-800-898-9675 (Home).
