DENVER, March 26, 2007 - Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) today announced it has signed a three-year contract to be the exclusive provider of converged voice and data services to the Arapahoe Library District in Englewood, Colo.
Qwest will support the district's 200,000 users and the nearly five million items they check out each year by connecting five of the library district's locations with Qwest metro optical Ethernet services, a metro area networking service. The new Qwest services will provide additional voice and data capabilities to support the library's circulation and reference functions, as well as allow the library district to conduct video training between branches.
The ability to increase bandwidth quickly is one of the key benefits of Qwest metro optical Ethernet services. "In addition to the excellent service we've received from Qwest, one of the important factors in our decision was scalability," said Austin Healy, Arapahoe Library District's network administrator. "As our needs change, we can call Qwest and within 10 days, we can have anywhere from 5Mbps to 1,000Mbps additional bandwidth " without the need to invest in additional network equipment ourselves."
Qwest's metro optical Ethernet combines the power of Ethernet and optical technologies across metropolitan area networks. This provides low cost, scalable and secure bandwidth and local area network (LAN)-to-LAN connectivity between two or more customer locations within a metro area.
"At Qwest, we focus on not just serving the current needs of our customers across the country, but on providing them with the tools they need to grow," said Tom Richards, executive vice president, Qwest business markets group. "Our metro optical Ethernet solution is a perfect example of a service that can be customized to each customer's needs " and can adapt with their organization."
QMOE can be less expensive than traditional time division multiplexing (TDM) services, eliminating the need for specialized wide area networking (WAN) support expertise and reducing the cost of WAN equipment with lower-cost Ethernet switches and routers. Because its bandwidth is available in easily scalable increments, customers can pay only for what they need, with the option of upgrading quickly to add capacity.
Qwest offers a unique and powerful combination of voice and data solutions for businesses, government agencies and consumers " locally and throughout the country. Customers coast to coast are turning to Qwest s industry-leading national fiber optic network and its Spirit of Service for quality products and superior customer experience.
