Twins Catcher Joe Mauer Signs On For Second Season With Qwest

MINNEAPOLIS, May 22, 2008 — Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) today announced a new spokesperson agreement with Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer. For the second season the Twins catcher will pitch for Qwest in Minnesota, serving as a company spokesperson.

“Qwest is an important supporter of Twins baseball and the community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of the Qwest team for a second season,” said Mauer.
For every RBI (run-batted-in) Mauer hits during the regular season Qwest will donate $100 to Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota, up to $10,000. Last year, the partnership yielded $10,000 for Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota, which works with more than 400 mentoring programs statewide to connect young people with quality mentoring experiences.
Mauer’s “Upgrade your Power” ad campaign highlights Qwest’s new super-fast Internet speeds. Additionally, Mauer will make appearances at Qwest community events.
“Joe Mauer is truly a hometown hero both on and off the field and Qwest is proud to have him on our team,” said John Stanoch, Qwest Minnesota president. “He exemplifies Qwest’s values because of his winning spirit on the field and his commitment to giving back to his community.”
Mauer is a 2001 graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, Minn. In 2006, he was the first American League catcher to win the batting title and the youngest batting champ since Alex Rodriguez in 1996. In 2007, Mauer recorded the Twins’ first inside-the-park home run since 2001.
Qwest also signed a sponsorship agreement with the Minnesota Twins for the 2008 season, which includes interactive and in-game fan promotions, including the Qwest Call to the Bullpen and Qwest Text Your Photo, which invites fans at every Twins home game to text their mobile photos to be displayed on the scoreboard and in an online event gallery at
