Qwest and the Qwest Foundation Announce Grants to Three Tacoma Nonprofit Organizations
SEATTLE, Sept. 15, 2008 — Qwest and the Qwest Foundation are pleased to announce $25,300 in grants awarded to three Tacoma nonprofit organizations. The funds include $10,000 to the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts; $7,500 to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium; and $7,800 to the Center for Dispute Resolution.
“Each of these organizations has a goal to provide educational experiences to students that will benefit them throughout their lives,” said Kirk Nelson, Qwest Washington president. “Qwest and the Qwest Foundation are honored to support them as they work to achieve this endeavor.”
The Foundation’s donation to the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts will be used to help fund curriculum materials for “Show Way,” a 45-minute theater production that tells the tale of one African-American family from slave times to the present day. The production is based off the award-winning book by Jacqueline Woodson. It will serve more than 20,000 students through 40 presentations at school assemblies in 25 schools throughout Pierce County.
A Qwest Foundation grant for the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium will be used for the “Structures of Life” program that will help enhance the Tacoma School District’s life sciences module in all of its 97 fourth-grade classrooms.
Qwest will present the Pierce County Center for Dispute Resolution (PCCDR) with a $7,800 check through the Qwest Family Work & Development Fund. The Fund is a unique partnership between Qwest and the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The grant will help fund the newly formed Youth-Teen Mediation Project, which trains teens to become mediators for their peers and provides life skills that will prepare them for jobs and help them resolve conflicts.
