Qwest Foundation Grant Helps Bring History to Life at "This is the Place" Heritage Park
SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 26, 2008 — A $10,000 grant announced today by the Qwest Foundation will help This Is The Place (TITP) Heritage Park bring history to life for thousands of Utah students.
TITP Heritage Park is a 450-acre living history facility representing the Utah pioneer era of 1847-1896. Original and replica buildings are staffed with volunteer and paid “interpreters” who demonstrate pioneer trades, crafts and skills to visitors. More than 20,000 students annually participate in a school tours program.
“The pioneers who came to Utah before the completion of the Transcontinental railroad in 1869 are an important part of our state’s history,” said Jerry Fenn, Qwest Utah president. “Qwest has been a part of Utah for more than 125 years, so we honor the legacy of these pioneers with this grant.”
“The best way to learn history is to experience history,” said Marged Kirkpatrick, TITP education director. “Our school tours give students hands-on experience in an authentic setting. Qwest’s generosity will allow us to reach even more kids in the coming school year -- helping them understand the history and heritage of Utah.”
Culturally, TITP offers educational programs, performing arts, folk arts, museum collections and “hands-on” learning activities. TITP is located at 2601 E. Sunnyside Avenue in Salt Lake City, across the street from Hogle Zoo.
