SEATTLE, Dec. 7, 2007 – The recent storms that struck Washington, ravaging homes and neighborhoods throughout the state, have prompted concerned citizens throughout the nation to offer a helping hand. Donations of necessary equipment, materials and money are pouring in to those directly impacted. Qwest joins those who care by announcing a donation of $10,000 -- $5,000 to both the Lewis County United Wayand the Grays Harbor United Way.
Qwest will also donate 1,700 corded phones. As people re-enter their homes, many have reported extensive damage, including destroyed or damaged telephones. To assist, Qwest will donate 850 corded phones each for both Lewis County and Grays Harbor residents.
“This is neighbors helping neighbors, and Qwest is committed to helping our community through these trying times,” said Kirk Nelson, Qwest president for Washington. “Our thoughts are with everyone who was impacted by the storms.”
In Lewis County, the phones will be available late Monday morning at the United Way warehouse located at 542 NW Center Street in Chehalis. Care packages will be made available along with the phones.
In Grays Harbor, the phones will be available Monday afternoon at the United Way located at 101 East Market Street, No. 544 in Aberdeen. Citizens may stop by the United Way to pick up a phone or they can call Sonya Samuelson at 1 360-532-6260.
“We are especially grateful to everyone, especially Qwest, for their support during this difficult time,” said Sonya Samuelson, executive director for the United Way of Grays Harbor. “Donations such as this will help those people who need it most recover from this disaster.”
Nelson said Qwest technicians have battled the storms to ensure the Spirit of Service remains intact. “Our first priority is the safety of our employees. Many technicians have experienced tragedies of their own,” he added. “But I’m proud of their commitment to work long, hard hours maintaining the integrity of Qwest’s network.”
