Los Lunas School District munications Network

LOS LUNAS, N.M., May 25, 2010 – Students in the Los Lunas School District now have access to state-of-the-art e-learning technologies via a new, district-wide managed voice and data network from Qwest Communications (NYSE: Q).

The Qwest solution combines the benefits of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), the security of a redundant high-speed broadband data network, and the convenience of a managed Ethernet platform to connect each of the district’s 16 schools and the office administration building with data transmission speeds up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps).

Key Facts

  • The Los Lunas School district utilizes Qwest Metro Optical Ethernet service for local area data networking between its schools and the office administration building. The service is ideal for e-learning initiatives, data file transfer, mail and file server services, and application services.
  • The school district is reducing operating costs and increasing the flexibility of its voice communications by utilizing Qwest VoIP. More than 1,000 VoIP telephone sets were installed – one in every classroom.
  • Under the agreement, Qwest is responsible for installation, maintenance, repair, online configurations and network monitoring.
  • About 80 percent of the cost of the network came from funds in the federal E-Rate program. E-Rate provides discounts to assist schools and libraries in the United States to obtain affordable telecommunications and Internet access.
