Coweeman Middle School to Go High-Tech Thanks to Qwest Foundation Teachers and Technology Donation
SEATTLE, April 10, 2008 – The Qwest Foundation today announced a grant of $10,000 to Coweeman Middle School teacher Debby Iverson. The grant will fund new technology, including an interactive whiteboard and wireless response system that will connect students with peers and experts through video conferencing, webcasts and e-mail connections and allow them to post projects to share with others.
“Digital technologies have the power to bring diverse topics to students in meaningful ways,” said Iverson. “Communication with peers around the world is only a click away. I’ll know this program is ultimately effective when students view themselves as an interactive part of a global society.”
Iverson’s primary focus will be connecting eighth-grade social studies students with authentic, primary sources for projects, however, her position as a media specialist will allow her to teach skills and share resources with all students in the school.
“Debby Iverson is a highly respected educator who has worked hard to encourage the use of technology at Coweeman Middle School,” said Kirk Nelson, Qwest president for Washington. “We are happy to provide her with funds that will help her students become 21st century learners.”
The Qwest Foundation will present the $10,000 check to Ms. Iverson and Coweeman Middle School on Thursday, April 10, at 1 p.m.
The Qwest Foundation thanks the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, OSPI, for their partnership. Through its Learning Technologies program, OSPI took the lead in promoting Teachers and Technology to Washington teachers and handled the administrative tasks that followed. OSPI is the primary agency charged with overseeing K-12 education in Washington state.
