Center Point Elementary Teachers Win $10,000 from Qwest Foundation

CENTER POINT, IOWA, May 21, 2008 – The Qwest Foundation and the Iowa School Boards Foundation today announced that Center Point Elementary teachers have won $10,000 from the Qwest Teachers and Technology grant program.

The teachers plan to use the money to create Wiki Encyclopedias of Knowledge, which will be used to improve student and teacher literacy, specifically Internet information literacy. This project, through guided practice, will promote the independent application of sound Internet research skills and ethical use of information at a young age.

“This is the second year that Qwest has initiated this very important program, and we are so pleased to reward teachers around our state for their innovative ideas,“ said Max Phillips, Qwest Iowa president. “Qwest is proud of these Center Point teachers, and I thank them for their important work.”

Beginning in the fall of 2008, the students will create five Wiki Encyclopedias of Knowledge. Each will be created by the students and will be cumulative. The encyclopedias will be on the Web and open to the world for public comment and review.

“Our school, like others, is under tremendous pressure to improve student literacy,“ said Carol Engelken, school board president. “The elementary teachers’ innovative plan for using technology to increase the effectiveness of research-based reading and writing skills is impressive.”

The purpose of the Qwest Teachers and Technology grant program is to recognize and reward public school teachers who use innovative technology in the classroom to improve the educational experience for students.

“This project encourages students to engage in higher order thinking skills, a collaborative study of content and practice,” said Mary Delagardelle, executive director of Iowa School Boards Foundation. “The project provides an optimal scenario for the best practice integration of technology for student learning.”
